WHAT IS FOOD? Human Foods are divided into Classes and the basic nutritional goal is to have a Balanced Diet with items from all of the major Food Groups. The Balanced Diet may or may not provide the experience called ‘SATIATION’.

Man is constituted as a Physical being that is made up of  about 100 trillion individual living cells that are structurally and functionally differentiated as the tissues and organ systems of the human body. Each living, individual cell is thermodynamically unstable. It means that the living system that is represented by the cell will dissolve into its non-living molecules and elements if not supplied energy from an external source. Food provides those energy-yielding molecules to energy-demanding molecules that constitute the Physical being. Food is used as a general term to describe substances consumed by man for nourishment. Food is defined as any substance which a living organism can convert into its own living substance from which it grows and develops new tissue, manipulates energy, etc., using a process called ‘metabolism’. The term ‘nutrient’ is explained as a substance that serves as food, or provides nourishment. The term ‘nutrition’ refers to the process of feeding or being nourished. As mentioned earlier, all the tissues and organs of which the human body is composed, consists of building blocks called cells. Every cell contains a spherical body called nucleus and a ground material, living substance, or living matter called ‘protoplasm’. The most striking characteristic of protoplasm is its vital property called ‘Nutrition’. In Human Physiology, the term ‘Nutrition’ is used to describe the ‘power’ which protoplasm has of attracting to itself the materials that provide energy, and the substances for its growth and maintenance from surrounding matter or extracellular environment. Man must feed himself and yet he depends upon the ability of cells to recognize the specific nutrient substances and take action to absorb them and process them for further use. Nutritional Science describes three major functions of food; 1. food generates energy for growth, maintenance and activity, 2. food supplies agents like vitamins and others that are needed to make or to help enzymes which carry out a variety of cellular processes, and 3. food provides the building materials like proteins and amino acids that are used for building cells and tissues of the body. The essential human nutrients are proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and vitamins. Human body cannot synthesize some of these nutrients and they must be supplied. To make this easy for understanding, human foods are divided into classes and the basic nutritional goal is to have a ‘Balanced Diet’ with items from all of the major Food Groups to perform all the living functions such as the uptake and conversion of nutrients, making, breaking, and repairing of organic molecules, production of energy, and regulation and coordination of various metabolic sequences.

WHAT IS WHOLE FOOD? :

WHAT IS FOOD? – This image called ‘MYPLATE’ depicts important Food Groups such as Vegetables,Fruits, Grains, Proteins and Dairy. Could we be able to say that these substances together be called as “WHOLE FOOD”???

The term ‘WHOLE’ is often used to describe something that is entire or complete to signify that it has all the elements or parts constituting the entire amount and it is not broken, damaged, or defective. The term ‘WHOLE’ also means auspicious, healthy, or uninjured and not diseased. We need to define human being as a ‘Whole Person’ to understand the complete entity that exists as man. There are five aspects of ‘Whole Person’:1. Man – the Physical being, 2. Man – the Mental being, 3. Man – the Social being, 4. Man – the Moral being, and 5. Man – the Spiritual being. These five components have to come together to establish the reality of man’s biological existence in the physical world. In the context of ‘Whole Food’, we need to find qualities that fit this description of being ‘Whole’ and its ability to perform all the functions that are attributed to Food. There is a huge growing concern about the substances that are added to food by food industry. The concern involves the use of synthetic or artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. Food that may contain artificial colors, artificial flavors and chemical preservatives may not promote good health and are even suspected to cause injury or disease. Hence, the concept of ‘Whole Food’ demands exclusion of such artificial colors and flavors and all synthetic preservatives from the food products used by man for his nutrition. Even when chemicals are not added to food, there is a concern about chemicals like synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and hormones that are used by the food and agriculture industry. It calls for understanding the term called ‘Natural Food’. To be called ‘natural’, food must not be exposed or tainted by chemicals that are not ‘naturally’ present in the substances that are consumed as Food. This concern is often reflected in the demand for ‘Organic Food’ that calls for exclusion of synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and growth hormones in production of food. Apart from these considerations, the use of additives to change the taste, texture, and appearance of food have caused several health-related concerns. Some of them relate to the use of artificial sweeteners, and the use of partially hydrogenated oils. To qualify as ‘Whole Food’, it may require exclusion of artificial sweeteners and the so-called ‘transfats’ from food. This concern is also extended to genetically modified organisms or GMOs that have become common. The genetically modified trait may impart some benefit to the substance and yet it may not qualify to be described as ‘Whole Food’.

WHOLE FOOD – WHOLE SATISFACTION :

Man is constituted to exist as a Mental being. Man relates to himself, his physical body with the help of his thoughts and moods. It seems that man often tries to discover his ‘essence’ or true identity not in his physical, living substance, but by knowing his ideas, thoughts, and imagination which describes his physical identity. These mental concepts that relate to identity are always associated with emotional feelings and moods that give meaning to the living condition or living state. Food provides substances to constitute the body and it also affects man’s thoughts and moods. The problems related to man’s feeding behavior will not be eliminated by supplying him what could be defined as ‘Balanced Diet’. The health problems associated with food consumption and caloric intake seem to persist even when man consumes ‘Balanced Diet’. It calls for further understanding of the functions of Food and we have to define the term ‘Whole Food’ by sharing the ‘Whole Story’ about Food and its role in human life. There are two important aspects of Food that are not taken into consideration by Nutritional Science. The Law may require that food products that are sold by retail food stores or grocery stores must provide adequate ‘Nutritional Information’. The products are labeled to provide information about the ingredients, allergens, and nutritional facts to help the consumer of food to make an informed choice about the food that is consumed. Such nutritional choices are helpful and yet there is a problem about the Food. There are two roles performed by Food and the concept of ‘Whole Food’ may have to give recognition to the role of Food apart from its function as the supply of nutrients. Food has to provide Satiation or experience of mental contentment or psychological satisfaction from its consumption.

WHOLE FOOD – WHOLE COMMUNITY :

Man is constituted to exist as a Social being. Man’s growth and development demands social support. Man as a biological living entity could only be described as association of trillions of individual cells. At the same time, there are about 10 times 100 trillion microbes that inhabit the human gastrointestinal tract. Man is a natural host and there is a mutually beneficial relationship between man the host, and the microbes that reside in his body. During the entire course of his life, man shares his food and drink with the guests who have taken residence in his body. These guests perform function of an internal organ system and are important for man’s health and well-being. Man will always exist as a member of a Biotic or Biological community without any chance of true independence. This understanding is promoting consumption of foods that are popularly termed as ‘PROBIOTIC’. Man to support his health and well-being has to consume some living organisms on a regular basis to replenish the microbes that are lost due to excretion. Food plays a vital role in the development, and maintenance of social interactions, and social relationships.Food-directed activities of man often need social situations and social bonding. Food has the intrinsic ability to nurture a relationship between the provider of the food and the food consumer. At the same time, there is a direct emotional relationship between man and the Food he consumes. Man derives emotional satisfaction called ‘Satiation’ when he consumes Food. It contributes to satisfaction or a sense of mental contentment to shape his living experience. Man lives to experience satisfaction or mental contentment by gratifying his desires or cravings. Food craving is very important part of man’s life and biological existence. Balanced Diet may or may not provide the psychological contentment that man wants to derive by consuming Food. Such satisfaction demands social bonding between man and the food and between man and his provider of food. Hence, we have to develop our understanding of Food as a medium or as a substance that has the potency to develop and form relationships, association, connection, and bonding between man and his social community and environment in which man exists, and by consumption of ‘Whole Food’ man may find ‘Whole Satisfaction’ in his living experience.

FOOD = ENERGY = LIFE = WHOLE ECOLOGY :

WHAT IS FOOD? ECOLOGY-WHOLE FOOD-WHOLE LIFE-WHOLE SPIRITUALITY:Food is the medium through which interrelatedness, interdependence, and the interconnectedness of living organisms is expressed.

Man is constituted to exist as a Spiritual being. The term ‘SPIRITUAL’ refers to relationships that are based upon feelings of sympathy and understanding. Man has to define the spiritual basis of his relationship with the rest of the biological community and the physical environment that is common to all of them. Ecology is the Science that is concerned with the relation between organisms and their environment. ‘Food Chain’ in Ecology describes sequence of transfers of matter and energy from organism to organism in the form of food. Food is the medium through which interrelatedness, interdependence, and the interconnectedness of organisms that are members of an Ecological System is expressed. A balanced growth of organisms that are connected in an Ecosystem demands the concept of ‘Sustainable Development’. Natural resources have to be used wisely to sustain the qualities of environment that supports living systems. Man needs food for his nourishment and to find this nourishment, man may have to stop environmental pollution and degradation that may upset the delicate Ecological Balance that operates in Nature. The manner in which man acquires energy-yielding molecules from his environment will define man’s definition of Food.

WHOLE FOOD – WHOLE MORALITY :

Man is constituted to exist as a Moral Being. Man is intrinsically endowed with a nature that displays the ability called discernment. Man has ability to choose right conduct and right behavior as he has ability to discern right from wrong, and distinguish good from bad. This human nature called discernment is related to the nature of the living substance or living matter called protoplasm. I have described its vital property called the Power of Nutrition. It uses this power with a sense of discernment. Protoplasm while attracting substances found in its external environment, it uses a very selective uptake process. Some substances are accepted and tolerated and some are rejected. It expresses intolerance to presence of certain substances and its response may cause a severe and sometimes life-threatening allergic reaction. Man has no ability to consume all substances as Food. Man has to know about good and bad food choices, and man has to know as to which food is right and as to which food is wrong. Human beings acting individually and collectively have developed ‘Food Culture’ and Food Traditions to express their moral and ethical principles in all of their food-directed activities and behavior. In recent times, these concerns have developed into ideas such as ‘FAIR-TRADE’, ‘WHOLE-TRADE’ and ‘ECO-TRADE’. There is a growing genuine moral and ethical concern to support the living conditions of people and communities involved in growing Food. There is a growing interest to consume Food that is called ‘LOCAL’; food that is grown or manufactured in the local communities. Man must consume Food for his living and he may have to do it in a morally and ethically responsible manner. These concerns have generated the demand for ethical and compassionate treatment of all animals used as Food for human consumption. Food and Agriculture Industry are developing standards for Compassionate Treatment of Animals. The concept of ‘Whole Food’ would include the moral and ethical principles that man would apply to define his food-related behavior.

WHOLE FOOD – WHOLE SPIRITUALITY :

Food is defined as any substance which a living organism can convert into its own living substance or living matter called protoplasm, the physical basis of Life. This substance could be viewed as a spiritual substance as it has the potency to formulate functional harmony and mutually beneficial relationship among the cells, tissues, and organ systems that grow and develop using the energy and organic molecules synthesized by protoplasm. The concept of ‘Whole Food’ will naturally include the concept of Food as a Whole Spiritual Substance that must be treated with respect and devotion. Such an attitude of respect and devotion would help man to use Food as a Spiritual Medium to establish a Connection, a Relationship, an Association, a Partnership, and Bonding between the Food Consumer and the Divine Providence.

WHOLE FOOD – WHOLE LIFE :

I define the term ‘WHOLE FOOD’ as follows taking into consideration the five aspects of the role of Food in supporting the biological existence of man in his community, and environment as no man is truly capable of independent existence that excludes the social community and the physical environment in which he exists:

1. Whole Food provides the nutritional substances for the Physical well-being of man and supports his living functions.

2. Whole Food provides the satisfaction, the mental contentment that man needs to support his Mental well-being.

3. Whole Food provides the stimulus for social relationships and social bonding that man needs to support his Social well-being.

4. Whole Food provides the ability to man to express his moral and ethical principles to support his Moral well-being.

5. Whole Food provides the Spiritual basis for man’s relationship with Divine Providence to support the Spiritual well-being of man.

Whole Food is the nutritional substance that supports man’s Physical, Mental, Social, Moral, and Spiritual well-being. These five components of well-being are important to have experience of Peace, Harmony, and Tranquility in human Life. There is no Joy in Life and there is no Happiness in Mind, and there will be no Love in Heart until man finds Peace, Harmony, and Tranquility in the Living Experience. I say that, Whole Food gives man the experience of Whole Life; a Life of Satisfaction, Contentment, Happiness, and Joy.

Kindly share your thoughts and views about the concept of ‘Whole Food’.

WHAT IS WHOLE HAPPINESS?

WHAT IS WHOLE HAPPINESS?

I want to present a concept of ‘Whole Happiness’, a three-dimensional concept of Happiness in which happiness exists as a harmonious interaction between Happy Person, Happy Place, and Happier People. A person’s condition called happiness always demands a place that contributes a sense of happiness, and a community that can share the feeling called happiness.

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Happiness: Arthur Schopenhauer(1788-1860), German philosopher had famously stated: "It is difficult to find happiness within oneself, but it is impossible to find it anywhere else."
What is Whole Happiness?  Arthur Schopenhauer(1788-1860), German philosopher had famously stated: “It is difficult to find happiness within oneself, but it is impossible to find it anywhere else.”

The word happiness(noun) is about having, showing, or causing a feeling of great pleasure, contentment, and joy. The word glad implies a strong, exultant feeling of joy. Being cheerful requires a steady display of bright spirits or a condition of rejoicing. The term ‘bliss’ can be used to describe the perfect condition of total happiness and in the Indian language of Sanskrit the word “ANANDA” describes the perfect state of existence while experiencing pure happiness, joy, or bliss. It is easy to describe happiness while it could be difficult to find happiness. The reason is that of finding circumstances that favor or cause the feeling of happiness. The problem is, man’s experience of happiness is affected by both outward and inner circumstances beyond his control. The pursuit of happiness can be granted as a Constitutional Right and yet there is no guarantee that man may find the happiness that he desires in his living experience. Arthur Schopenhauer stated: “It is difficult to find happiness within oneself, but it is impossible to find it anywhere else.” While happiness is an inner experience, it is formulated by the external circumstances found in a given place, at a given time, and in a given environment. Happiness cannot be discovered and people cannot find happiness until the external circumstances favor experience of happiness. If the circumstances that do not favor experience of happiness cannot be changed, man experiences stress and has to use coping mechanisms to deal with those unhappy circumstances. The ability to cope with unhappy circumstances may not be viewed as a state of having, showing, or causing a feeling of great contentment, pleasure, and joy.  I am not inclined to say that Schopenhauer taught a ‘pessimistic’ view of human existence. He placed emphasis on human will and he considered that pleasure is simply the absence of pain. Schopenhauer lived a solitary life from 1831 until his death in 1860 and for about 28 years of his life he was resentful at the world’s failure to recognize his genius. Fortunately for him, his works received international recognition during the final years of his life and provided him experience of some happiness.

THE THEORY AND THE NATURE OF HUMAN WILL:

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Happiness: There is a fundamental problem with man's experience of happiness. Man has no choice other than that of interacting with the circumstances of a given environment in which he exists at any given time.
What is Whole Happiness? There is a fundamental problem with man’s experience of happiness. Man has no choice other than that of interacting with the circumstances of a given environment in which he exists at any given time.

Will is the term used in philosophy and psychology to describe the faculty of mind that may play a role to stimulate motivation of purposeful activity. Will is a motivating force and is related to other words such as wish, desire, appetite, impulse, choice, purpose, and it involves converting a thought into action. Will also includes the power of controlling one’s own actions. The Theory of the Will and the Freedom of the Will have been variously interpreted. Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Descartes and Kant describe Will as personal faculty or function. Spinoza, Leibniz and Hume describe Will as the externalized result of interaction of conflicting elements. Hobbes, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche describe Will as manifestation of personality. The religious doctrine of Determinism does not affirm the reality of individual’s Will. Modern Psychology considers the concept of Will as unscientific and human actions are explained on the basis of unconscious motivation.

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Happiness;
What is Whole Happiness? Arthur Schopenhauer described the World as a constant conflict of individual ‘wills’ resulting in frustration and pain. Pleasure is simply the absence of pain and can be achieved only through renunciation of desire. I may be able to control my desires and it may not defend me or prevent another individual exercising his Free Will to take action that will deny me the experience called Happiness. What is the Truth or What is the reality of Happiness???

During 1813-14, Schopenhauer was introduced to the teachings of Indian antiquity – the Indian Philosophy of the Vedas and their interpretations in texts called the Upanishads. It gives me a very good reason to share his views about human existence and about man’s purpose in life. Schopenhauer viewed the entire world is the representation of a single Will of which our individual wills are phenomena. He used the word will to describe desire, striving, wanting, effort, and urging. Man is  expression of insatiable will to life. It is through the will that mankind finds all their suffering. Desire for more is what causes this suffering. Schopenhauer claimed that our world is driven by a continually dissatisfied will that is continually seeking satisfaction. He tried to account for the world in all its significant aspects. He considers the pain and striving of the human condition and the possibility of deliverance from it.

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Happiness: How to Find Happiness in Each Day of Human Existence??? Schopenhauer explained that human "WILL" exists outside Time, Space, and Causality.
What is Whole Happiness? How to Find Happiness in Each Day of Human Existence???  Schopenhauer explained that human “WILL” exists outside Time, Space, and Causality.

Schopenhauer agrees with Immanuel Kant about human perceptions of the world in which man exists. But he equated Kant’s “thing-in-itself” with a blind impelling force manifesting itself in individuals as the “Will” to live. Schopenhauer’s most important work is “The World as Will and Idea”(1818-19) and a revised edition titled “The World as Will and Representation.”  His doctrine of the Primacy of the Will also emphasizes irrationality of Will. The Will(“thing-in-itself”) is not perceivable as a presentation and it exists outside Time, Space, and Causality. He viewed inner experience as intuited through the Will as the most important form of experience. He tried to understand the relationship between human will and human body. Man can go beyond simple perception to know the ultimate reality called the “Will” through which man is compelled to act to express love, hate, desire, and rejection. Although the Will is entirely real, it is not free nor does it have any ultimate purpose. According to Schopenhauer, human will is all-consuming, pointless, and negative. There is also no escape from the Will as manifested in Nature; the expressions of Will are seen throughout the natural world as in the struggles of animals, the stirring of a seed, and the turning of a magnet. Schopenhauer comes to the conclusion that the purpose in life must be that of escaping the Will and its painful strivings. The arts, especially the Art of Music with their “will-less perception” provide a temporary haven. The only final escape is through the “turning of the Will against itself”, a mysterious process that results in Liberation by causing the sheer extinction of the Will. The Indian School of Thought called ‘The Karma – Yoga’ or ‘The Yoga of Action’ describes that man has no choice and cannot avoid action and it recommends renunciation of desire to experience or tasting the fruits of one’s own actions.

WholeDude - Whole Designer - Whole Happiness: In my view, Life cannot be explained on the basis of uncaused, self-caused, unguided, random, and spontaneous actions or events. Life, the striving, the desire, the 'Will' is action towards a goal. Most living functions of the human organism are performed by independent, autonomous units called cells that perform goal-oriented actions without the use of man's imagination or thought.

In my view, Life cannot be explained on the basis of uncaused, self-caused, unguided, random, and spontaneous actions or events. If Life has a goal or purpose, it primarily involves the striving or desire towards the goal or purpose to maintain the condition called existence. The human organism comprises of trillions of individual, independent, autonomous units called cells that perform living functions without any assistance from imagination or thought of man who lives in the world because of those living functions. Human existence cannot be explained on the basis of human will to exist if that human will is dependent upon human thought and imagination. The human being does experience desires and man indeed takes action to respond to those desires. However, the experience called happiness depends upon a factor called ‘Contentment’. It is the factor which determines the degree of gratification that is needed for producing the effect called ‘Satisfaction’. Man can choose to set the bar called Contentment at a high or low-level and experience the effect called Satisfaction while seeking gratification of his desires. There is no “Whole Happiness” until there is Satisfaction of desires. To conquer the insatiable enemy called DESIRE, to achieve the effect called SATISFACTION, man must overcome the organs of sense perception, the mind and intellect which are the sitting places of Desire. In my view, there is “Whole Happiness” if and only if man has fully recognized the existence of his relationship, partnership, connection, and association with an external source of “Whole Happiness.” I describe Spirit and Soul as the material principle that establishes man’s relationship with that external source of Happiness and thereby sustains man’s desire to live or to have life. Man is a Spiritual Being who can use his Spirit and Soul to exercise control over his mind, intellect, and senses to manage the feelings, the cravings, the urge, and the inner strivings that could manifest as Free Will and provide motivating power to translate thoughts into actions performed in the external world.

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Happiness: The word Sunshine means the light and heat from the Sun and Sunshine is used to describe the feeling of Cheerfulness and Happiness. To have a true or real experience of Happiness, man needs an external source of Happiness.
What is Whole Happiness? The word Sunshine means light and heat from the Sun and Sunshine is used to describe the feeling of Cheerfulness and Happiness. To have a true or real experience of Happiness, man needs an external source of Happiness.

Whole Happiness, Pure Joy, and Perfect Bliss is a condition that demands connection, relationship, partnership, and association between man and his external source of support that formulates the conditions of human existence. In other words, man finds experience of Sunshine, Cheerfulness, and Happiness under the influence of an external source of Whole Happiness, or a Creator of Happiness who designs place of happiness, and a biological community to share happiness for man never exists all alone, or all by himself.

I reached the United States during 1986 to discover that I have lost all Freedom; I had given up the Freedom associated with my Indian citizenship and found that my existence is not dependent upon Freedom but on Divine Providence and Divine Grace. Do I have a choice? Is Freedom an entitlement? Is there Freedom in Free World??? Freedom is it self-determined or is it determined by external causes???

The word ‘Freedom’ has many meanings –  theological, metaphysical, psychological, moral, natural, and civil. Freedom may mean enjoyment of personal liberty, of not being a slave, nor a prisoner, and in essence it speaks about the freedom in acting and choosing. Freedom may imply the state of not being subject to determining forces. Is it self-determined or is it determined by external causes???

There is a promise in The New Testament Book, The Epistle of Apostle Paul to Romans, Chapter 9, verse# 25: As He says in Hosea: “I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;”

“Free World” is a Cold War era term often used by the US to describe those countries that are not in the sphere of influence of Communist States like the Soviet Union, or the People’s Republic of China. United States is the Leader of the Free World, and it is the world’s Democratic Superpower. In response to Communist China’s military occupation of  sovereign nation of Tibet, United States to defend its own national interests and to combat the threat of Communist Expansionism, initiated a program in 1950s to render assistance to the Tibetan Resistance Movement to uphold principles of Freedom and Democracy in the Land of Tibet. John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States(1961-1963) created  a military alliance/pact between the US, India, and Tibet to fight the military threat posed by China. During 1969, I made a deliberate choice to serve in India’s Armed Forces to face the military challenge and threat posed by China after it had brutally attacked India across its Himalayan frontier during 1962. On completion of my military training, I  joined this US, India, Tibet military alliance/pact and was posted to a military establishment called Establishment No. 22, a military organization known to public as ‘Special Frontier Force’. I am very passionate defender of Freedom and Democracy. During years spent in India, I imagined that I had freedom to choose and act and had deliberately expressed this sense of personal freedom when I got married during 1973. This choice had its consequences. It initiated a process of alienation and estrangement from my birth-related Hindu-Brahman, social community. The first blow to my sense of social identity and birth affiliation was delivered during 1976 while I was at Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. By year 1982, I have recognized I have no freedom to choose, or act without compromising my sense of self-respect, and self-dignity. For all practical purposes, I was transformed into a Foreigner or Alien while I was still serving my country as a Commissioned Officer of its Armed Forces. It undermined my ability to serve in the Armed Forces to defend the Freedom of the Country while I am perceived as a Foreigner or Alien. At that time, as the father of two young children, I felt that I have no choice other than that of leaving India to find a place in another part of Free World. Now, I am conscious of the lack of freedom to make choices, or I may state that I am only free to make a choice that is foreordained, or predetermined. In the drama of human life and history, do we have capacity to choose our Life according to our Free Will??? The issue of human freedom, and Freedom in World may have to be reconciled with God’s omniscience, and omnipotence. We have to understand as to what extent the will of an individual can and does determine some of his acts. If man is entirely dependent upon God’s power, can man make bad, or evil choices??? Do we need divine grace for both meritorious, and even bad acts??? How to define the problem of the universal supposition of responsibility for personal actions??? Can there be Freedom in absence of Divine Providence, and Divine Grace???

DETERMINISM AND FREE WILL:

This Kid is apparently has Free Will and can choose to get wet in the rain. He can also choose to remain under a shade and keep dry. This ability to choose is operated by an external contingency called rain. Does man have the natural ability to make choices in the face of all types of external contingencies. Plato held that actions are determined by the extent of a person's understanding, or reasoning.

Does man have the natural ability to make choices in the face of all types of external contingencies??? Plato held that actions are determined by the extent of a person’s understanding, or reasoning. The New Testament Book, The Epistle of Apostle Paul to Romans, Chapter 8, verses 28-30 describe the concept of “Predestination.” Verse# 30 reads: “Moreover, those He predestined, them He also called; those He called, them He also Justified; those He justified, them He also glorified.” I live in expectation of finding this ‘glory’ in the eyes of God.

The term Free Will refers to the power or capacity to choose among alternatives. It refers to the ability to act in certain situations independently of natural, social, or divine restraints. Will is the factor which turns human thought into human action and behavior. Existentialist thinkers like Jean Paul Sartre speak about the concept of a radical, perpetual, and frequently agonizing freedom of choice. Sartre claims that man is “condemned to be free” even though his situation may be wholly determined. Behavioral psychologists hold the view that human action and behavior is determined by the nature of an external environmental stimulus. Sigmund Freud held the view that human actions are determined by hidden mental causes which control their actions; “You have an illusion of a psychic freedom within you which you do not want to give up.” Freud recommends that this “deeply rooted belief in psychic freedom and choice” must be given up because it “is quite unscientific.” Man appears to be subject to the Law of Cause and Necessity, or is governed by a doctrine of Determinism.

THE DOCTRINE OF PREDESTINATION:

Saint Augustine(354-430), Doctor of the Church, founder of Christian theology followed the doctrine of predestination or divine grace that states God's superintendence of the Whole Cosmos and everything in it.

Saint Thomas Aquinas held the view that God’s omnipotence does not include predetermination of human will. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that predestination is consistent with free will since God moves the soul according to its nature. Do I make my own choices while God foreordained my circumstances? Does God have foreknowledge of my reaction to His Choice? If God foreordained the circumstances, the choices, and the destiny of the person according to His Perfect Will, how to explain the exercise of free will? It appears to me that God may elect or predestinate the circumstances of a person and make a choice on His own initiative on the basis of His knowing in advance the reactions of the person to His Will. Man’s free will is like the game of chess; man can make his moves while playing the game according to God’s plan while God is the second Player with whom man has to contend.

THE DESIRE FOR FREEDOM CREATES TENSION, AND STRESS AS IT IS OPPOSED BY MAN’S DEPENDENT EXISTENCE.

G.W.F. Hegel, German philosopher, in his famous lectures on the Philosophy of Religion(1832) had reviewed the whole human history as a vast dialectical movement toward realization of freedom. In Hegel’s opinion, the reality of history is ‘spirit’ and the story of religion is the process by which ‘spirit’ comes to full consciousness of itself following the dialectical pattern of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. According to Hegel, religion plays a role in the self-realization of ‘spirit’.

HINDU BRAHMIN CUT OFF FROM GOD AND TEMPLE: IN GERMAN PHILOSOPHER HEGEL'S OPINION, THE STORY OF RELIGION IS ABOUT MAN'S SEARCH FOR FREEDOM. IN MY OPINION, THERE IS NO SUCH FREEDOM IF MAN CANNOT CONTROL, OR MODIFY HIS EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT SHAPE MAN'S DEPENDENT EXISTENCE.

According to the laws of Hegelian Dialectic, one concept(thesis) inevitably generates its opposite(antithesis), their interaction leads to a new concept(synthesis) which in turn becomes the thesis of a new triad. The concept of ‘freedom’ is opposed by the problem of ‘dependence’ as ‘dependence’ determines the degree of freedom man has at any given time while he exists in a given environment, a place, while participating in social interactions with members of a social community or inhabitants of that place.

HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM GOD AND TEMPLE: THE STORY OF RELIGION IS ABOUT HUMAN SPIRIT AND SPIRIT'S CONSCIOUSNESS OF ITSELF. IF GOD CONTROLS OR DETERMINES MAN'S EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES, THERE WILL BE PROBLEMS IN THE NATURE OF MAN'S RELATIONSHIP TO GOD.

I do not speak about freedom in the context of Freedom of Religion or the history of religion of any given group of people. I speak about human freedom and its relationship with human nature. Liberty and Freedom is the opposite of servitude, or bondage, whether physical, moral, or spiritual. Human ‘spirit’ and human desire for freedom are related not because of religion but because of human nature. Man cannot avoid ‘dependence’ and at the same time, man wants to retain or sustain his free will, his freedom to choose, and his freedom to decide a course of action in response to changes in external circumstances.

In ‘spirit’ man imagines, desires, and seeks freedom from ‘dependence’ that establishes his conditioned existence. Man primarily expresses his freedom in manipulating the dependent nature of his conditioned existence. Man seeks to exist as an ‘Individual’ with ‘Individuality’ while being attached and while surviving on support from an external source.

HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM GOD AND TEMPLE: MAN PRIMARILY EXPRESSES HIS FREEDOM IN MANIPULATING THE DEPENDENT NATURE OF HIS CONDITIONED EXISTENCE. MAN SEEKS TO EXIST AS AN INDIVIDUAL WITH INDIVIDUALITY WHILE HE IS ATTACHED AND SURVIVES ON SUPPORT FROM AN EXTERNAL SOURCE.

Freedom and Dependence are the two basic elements of human nature that are perpetually in tension with one another. These are the basic elements of human relationships and human interactions. If religion formulates man’s relationship with God, that relationship is shaped by the degree of tension between the opposing elements of freedom and dependence that each individual person may experience at a given time, and place.

The more man struggles to control or to manipulate his external circumstances, greater will be the gap between freedom and dependence. The resulting stress or tension between two conflicting realities; the distance between freedom and dependence causes separation, detachment, estrangement or alienation.

HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM GOD AND TEMPLE: IF GOD PREDETERMINES MAN'S EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES, IF GOD IS THE PRIMECAUSE OF THE GAP BETWEEN MAN'S FREEDOM AND DEPENDENCE, MAN'S RELATIONSHIP TO HIS GOD WILL BE AFFECTED BY THE PROBLEM OF SEPARATION, DETACHMENT, ESTRANGEMENT, AND ALIENATION.

In human interactions and human relationships, if there is no freedom of action, and if there is no freedom of choice, the interaction and relationship suffers leading to progressive estrangement, separation, alienation, and detachment. If God predetermined man’s external circumstances, and if God is Prime Cause of a widening gap between man’s freedom, and dependence, man’s relationship with his God will be affected by the problem of separation, detachment, estrangement, and alienation.

The term ‘freedom’ refers to the state of not being subject to determining forces,  enjoyment of civil rights like freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of movement, and freedom to seek gainful employment. The opposite of freedom is slavery, bondage, serfdom, servitude, and in modern economic times freedom is often interpreted as lack of equal rights to earnings, remuneration, or salary for physical, or mental labor rendered to an employer. However, it may be noted that freedom is not self-determined as it is always determined by external causes.

Determinism is the doctrine that states, everything including one’s choice of action is the necessary result of  sequence of causes.  God is viewed as Prime Cause as God’s Supreme Will is related to superintendence of the whole cosmos and everything in it. Existence of free will has to be reconciled with God’s omniscience, and with divine grace which could be necessary for any meritorious or even bad acts. In Indian tradition it is believed that God foreordained circumstances and destiny of a person according to His Supreme Will.

God may elect or predestinate the circumstances of a person and make a choice on God’s own initiative on the basis of God’s knowing in advance or foreknowledge as to how a person may react or respond to external circumstances caused by His Supreme Will. God has foreknowledge of man’s reaction to His choice. Man may think that he determines his course of action and makes a choice not knowing that God has already known that course of action. God influences external circumstances to provide a particular course of action as  the only option available to meet that contingency.

Human interpersonal relationships fail to thrive if they become a source of stress, or tension. If man is left with no option, has no freedom to choose or act, his relationship to his God suffers for not want of faith or belief. Man’s trusting relationship with his God demands a sense of hope, comfort, and reassurance to cope with changing external circumstances.

The term “excommunicate” means to exclude a person by an act of member of clergy or temple authority from the sacraments, rights and privileges of a church or temple. Excommunicated person is cutoff from communion with a church or temple which is understood as body of God. It is similar to living in exile when the affected person is banished and has to live away from one’s country, community, and temple, or church. Excommunication need not always be enforced by a decree as it sometimes is self-imposed for an excommunicated person may have no freedom of action or free to choose on his own. In Indian tradition excommunicated person is not invited to participate in cultural events, ceremonies, and gatherings associated with birth, death, marriage, and other events to celebrate religious holidays. I believe that I am excommunicated for I find no opportunity to engage other members of Hindu Brahmin community in social interactions over the last 25 years. It may be traced back to 1989 when I was cutoff from Malibu Hindu Temple in Santa Monica Hills as the presiding Deity has determined a course of action in Santa Monica that reshaped the country in which I live into ‘wilderness’. I left India in 1984 in my quest for Promised Land. I arrived in Ann Arbor, Michigan,United States during July 1986 and I have not found my final destination.

Promised Land is viewed as a place where one expects to have a better life. In India,  experience of estrangement, separation, detachment, and alienation forced me to make a choice, and the external circumstances allowed me to depart from India in search of a ‘Promised Land’. My desire to live away from India is fully supported by external circumstances sanctioned by my God for I could easily overcome all the obstacles that prevented my departure from India. For example, I spent an entire year(1982-83) to resist a posting order and to obtain Government of India’s approval to resign my Permanent Regular Commission in Indian Army Medical Corps. On January 10, 1984, I could depart from India, the day on which my letter of resignation was sanctioned in New Delhi.

Wilderness describes an uncultivated, uninhabited, waste, barren, empty, wild, arid, and desolate region that is naturally incapable of supporting almost any life. A dry, sandy region like desert brings to the mind an image of wilderness. However in such river less regions, land of drought, trackless wasteland of rock and sand, solitary places, some nomads may venture to occupy it for they have no other choice. Nomad is a person having no permanent home, a wanderer who has no fixed home, an itinerant who travels from place to place for he has not reached his final destination. External circumstances are powerful and in present day, modern urban environment, we find people who have no homes of their own, or people who barely subsist with very few material possessions. Such wanderers do not participate in social actions and interactions while they exist among members of a social community that fully participates in social events.

HINDU BRAHMIN’S SOCIAL SEGREGATION

HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM HIS GOD AND TEMPLE:
WHAT IS DETACHED DEVOTION? HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM HIS GOD AND TEMPLE(MALIBU HINDU TEMPLE IN SANTA MONICA HILLS): MY QUEST FOR PROMISED LAND HAS FORCED ME TO EXPERIENCE NOMADIC LIFE IN WILDERNESS. AS A NOMAD, I HAVE NO OBLIGATION OR EXPECTATION TO PARTICIPATE IN SOCIAL EVENTS OTHER THAN THAT OF ACTIVITIES THAT DIRECTLY SUPPORT MY DAILY MINIMALISTIC EXISTENCE.

In Indian tradition, a person is expected to maintain social contacts and social relationships that are consistent with his external circumstances. If a person has to lead a nomadic way of life, that person can live to the best of his ability without any social obligations imposed by cultural norms. A nomad is not required to socially entertain other members of his community and a nomad is exempted from observing Indian traditions that describe the rules of hospitality. A nomad need not provide room, food, and drink or accept the burden of hosting a guest at his temporary dwelling. In Indian tradition, hospitality imposes equal burden upon all participating members; if a person is entertained as a guest at the dwelling of another person, he would have an equal responsibility of treating that person as his guest at the next available opportunity. I cannot accept a social invitation unless I have the same ability to extend a social invitation. It is a natural process that encourages social separation, segregation, detachment, and alienation that is operated by changing external circumstances. It can be explained as a coping mechanism to survive at any given place where opportunities for social advancement are few or minimal.

HINDU BRAHMIN’S MINIMALISTIC EXISTENCE

In Indian tradition, social actions, and social interactions are determined by social position, social ranking, social status, and social occupation of participating members. While it is true in Indian social ranking system a Brahmin may enjoy high-ranking, it is not a passport to give access to unlimited social activity. For example, Indian epic poems of Ramayana, and Mahabharata illustrate as to how external circumstances changed the social life of their princely characters such as Prince Rama, Prince Laxmana, and Pandava princes.

WHAT IS DETACHED DEVOTION? HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM HIS GOD AND TEMPLE(MALIBU HINDU TEMPLE IN SANTA MONICA HILLS): IS THIS AN IMAGE OF “PROMISED LAND” OR IS THIS AN IMAGE OF WILDERNESS???  HUMAN PERCEPTIONS OF THE WORLD ARE ENTIRELY SHAPED BY EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES. IF I AM A SLAVE HELD IN CAPTIVITY SERVING EGYPT, MY EMANCIPATION, MY SALVATION, MY LIBERATION INVOLVES MY JOURNEY TO THIS LAND WHICH LOOKS PRACTICALLY BARREN.

Man in his thoughts, dreams, and imagination desires freedom of choice, and freedom of action. Such desire for freedom is easily eliminated by man’s external circumstances. Man’s survival in any type of external environment requires operation of a principle called ‘dependence’, the ability to obtain matter, and energy from external source. Man’s desire for freedom shapes his ‘ego’ or self-pride. If man can control, or manipulate his external source of support, it boosts up his ego or self-pride. If man has to survive basically depending upon Divine Providence, his ego or self-pride is subdued, and he is humbled and acquires an attitude called humility. This attitude of humility is expressed in his behavior and actions that can be recognized as ‘Devotion’, acknowledgment of Divine Providence.

HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM HIS GOD AND TEMPLE:
WHAT IS DETACHED DEVOTION? HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM HIS GOD AND TEMPLE(MALIBU HINDU TEMPLE IN SANTA MONICA HILLS): A SANDY DESERT MAY STILL ALLOW A MAN TO KEEP HIS MINIMALISTIC EXISTENCE WHILE THE MAN MAY HAVE NO FREEDOM OF CHOICE AND THERE IS NO FREEDOM OF ACTION. LACK OF FREEDOM SUBDUES MAN’S EGO OR SELF-PRIDE GIVING ROOM TO HUMBLENESS AND HUMILITY.

HINDU BRAHMIN’S JOURNEY TO FIND DEVOTION WITH DETACHMENT:

HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM HIS GOD AND TEMPLE:
WHAT IS DETACHED DEVOTION? HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM HIS GOD AND TEMPLE(MALIBU HINDU TEMPLE IN SANTA MONICA HILLS): WHILE EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES CAN LEAD TO SEPARATION, SEGREGATION, DETACHMENT, AND ALIENATION, MAN MAY FIND EMANCIPATION, OR LIBERATION FROM HIS ‘EGO’ OR SELF-PRIDE THAT TRANSFORMS MAN’S CHARACTER GIVING PLACE TO MEEKNESS, HUMBLENESS, AND HUMILITY.

Man who has limited freedom of action and choice is forced to detach himself from desires of acquiring material possessions and gets disinterested in his social ranking, social position, social status, and social occupation. Deprivation of freedom eliminates opportunities for social actions and social interactions for man has to separate himself from realities of external world if he has to find peace, harmony, and tranquility while living a life of utter simplicity. This social disengagement or detachment initiates a natural process that destroys man’s ego or self-pride. At the same time, man who is humble, meek and acquired the nature called humility will be able to acknowledge Divine Providence without seeking communion with his God at a House of Worship or Temple. While people with material possessions and material attachments prefer to worship God in Temples they build, a detached person expresses his humility in actions and behavior that can be recognized as devotion.

HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM HIS GOD AND TEMPLE(MALIBU HINDU TEMPLE IN SANTA MONICA HILLS): DETACHMENT WITH DEVOTION ELIMINATES THE REQUIREMENT OF COMMUNION WITH GOD AT A HOUSE OF WORSHIP, CHURCH, OR TEMPLE. DEVOTION IS ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE, IT GIVES ABILITY TO HEAR GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS IN WILDERNESS WHERE THERE IS NO HOUSE OF WORSHIP, CHURCH, OR TEMPLE.

Hindu Brahmin living separated, detached, excommunicated, and alienated from his social community, leading a life of minimalistic existence, could still hear God’s word as shared in The Book of Matthew, Chapter 4, verse #4: Jesus answered, “It is Written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” This was a statement made by Jesus when he was forced to experience wilderness and hunger by manipulation of his external circumstances. Jesus was unwilling to find food, and was unwilling to change or influence his external environment to any extent that may go beyond Divine Providence. Tolerance of hunger and thirst is a humbling process to teach discipline and obedience and man simply exists accepting the boundaries or limitations of Divine Providence.

The words that I hear from Book of Matthew connect me to their original source. When Jesus claims, “It is Written”, He is directing attention to original source of words He spoke, The Old Testament Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 8, verse #3: “He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.”

MAN’S FREEDOM FROM DEPENDENCE – DETACHED DEVOTION:

HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM GOD AND TEMPLE(MALIBU HINDU TEMPLE IN SANTA MONICA HILLS): JESUS WAS LED INTO THE DESERT OR WILDERNESS. AFTER FASTING FORTY DAYS AND FORTY NIGHTS HE WAS HUNGRY. HE DECLARED HIS FREEDOM AND INDEPENDENCE FROM DEPENDENCE BY BECOMING ALOOF, DISINTERESTED, DISENGAGED, NOT CONNECTED, OR DETACHED TO ANY EMOTION OR DESIRE TO STRUGGLE WITH CHANGING EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES OF HIS CONDITIONED LIFE IN DESERT OR WILDERNESS WITHOUT ACCESS TO FOOD OR WATER.

Man’s existence or lifetime is a constant struggle for man needs support from an external source to keep his life. That support demands man’s connection, partnership, bonding, relationship, or association with his external environment. This dependence on external support generates tension or stress for it directly opposes man’s desire for freedom or independence. By careful analysis, man can understand that external support is contributed by Divine Providence without demanding man’s faith or belief in God. Divine Providence operates without any concern for man’s struggle to control, to modify, or to influence his changing external circumstances. Divine Providence operates without demanding attachment for its nature is detached, aloof, separate, not involved by emotion or desires, disengaged, disconnected and indifferent to man’s physical and mental struggles. Jesus was led into the desert or wilderness. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, Jesus was hungry. And yet, He demonstrated His unwillingness to struggle to alter or change external circumstances imposed by desert or wilderness that provides no access to food or water. Jesus conquered dependence and won His freedom by finding Life that comes by hearing the word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

HINDU BRAHMIN CUTOFF FROM GOD AND TEMPLE(MALIBU HINDU TEMPLE IN SANTA MONICA HILLS): JESUS DEMONSTRATED THE NEED FOR DEVOTION; A DEVOTION NOT BASED ON MAN'S ATTACHMENT TO HIS EXTERNAL STRUGGLE. WHEN DETACHED, MAN FINDS A NEW LIFE; A LIFE WITHOUT DEPENDENCE ON FOOD AND WATER.

Jesus demonstrated the need for devotion; a devotion not based on man’s attachment to his external struggle. Man has to sever his attachments to a life that demands a constant struggle with external causes. When truly detached, man finds a new Life; a Life without dependence, a Life of freedom and independence that flows from the word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. For I am cutoff from my God and Temple, I recognize futility of my external struggle while I have no freedom of action, or freedom of choice. As my life’s journey proceeds through wilderness, I can only seek a Life that flows from the WORD.

WHAT IS SLAVERY? Fourth of July Celebration – A Slave in Free World: FREEDOM HOUSE’S FREEDOM IN THE WORLD MAP: I lived in India since my birth and I left India during 1984 due to a concern about my Freedom after alienation or estrangement from my birth social community.

FREEDOM AND FREE WORLD: 54th TIBETAN NATIONAL UPRISING DAY, MARCH 10, 2013:

Kalon Tripa Dr. Lobsang Sangay, political head of the Tibetan people, unfurls and raises the Tibetan National Flag on the 53rd National Uprising Day on March 10, 2012 in Dharamsala, India. Tibetan people are demanding their Right to Natural Freedom that was taken away by the military occupation of their Land. Freedom in Tibet is about oppression caused by foreign occupation.

Freedom in Free World: I have arrived in the United States for I shared the Motto of this Nation: "In God We Trust." The New Testament Book, Apostle Paul's Letter to Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse# 19 speaks of my quest for Freedom: "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household,..." There is a promise in The New Testament Book, The Epistle of Apostle Paul to Romans, Chapter 9, verse# 25: As He says in Hosea: “I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;”

Mylapore, Madras is my birth place. I am native of Rajahmundry. Ms. Annie Besant had visited Rajahmundry twice and opened a place of worship known as ‘DIVYA GJYAN SAMAJ’ to honour the memory of Colonel Henry Steel Olcott, the first President of Theosophical Society International at Adyar, Madras. This temple is located in Alcot Gardens, Rajahmundry.

THEOSOPHY – THE CULTURAL ENRICHMENT OF INDIA :

Theosophy is derived from the Greek ‘theos’; “God”, and ‘sophia’; “Wisdom”, and is usually translated as “Divine Wisdom”. Theosophy is based upon the principle that God must be experienced directly to be known at all. It lays emphasis on mystical experience. It claims that a deeper spiritual reality exists with which direct contact may be established through intuition, meditation, and revelation, by transcending man’s normal consciousness. It is held that knowledge of the ‘Divine Wisdom’ gives access to the mysteries of nature and man’s deeper being. It views that the ‘reality’ is constituted by one principle. Theosophists have affirmed an underlying all-encompassing unity that subsumes all differentiation. The Theosophical Society affirms the following objectives; 1. to form a nucleus of the universal brotherhood of humanity without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or colour; 2. to encourage the study of comparative religion, philosophy, and science; and 3. to investigate unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent in man. The Society insists that it is not offering a new system of thought but it merely identifies certain universal concepts of God, nature and man that are known to wise men in all ages and that may be found in the teaching of all the great religions.

Annie Besant after her conversion to Theosophy in 1889, traveled to Adyar, Madras and made India her home. She was active in educational and humanitarian work in India. She founded the Central Hindu College at Varanasi. Beginning in 1916, she became involved in the Indian independence movement and established the Indian Home Rule League. She was the president of the Theosophical Society from 1907 until her death in 1933. She wrote several books to promote understanding of theosophical belief. Her leadership gave Indians a sense of pride in that they were exporting ideas of importance to the West. The Theosophy movement has been a pioneering agency in promotion of greater Western acquaintance with Eastern thought.

DISCOVER ‘ THE STAR OF INDIA ‘ – THE SECOND COMING OF BUDDHA :

Jiddu Krishnamurti born into a Telugu speaking Hindu Brahmin family at Madanapalli in the present State of Andhra Pradesh was adopted by Annie Besant in 1909 when he was about 14 years old. She proclaimed that Krishnamurti is the vehicle of a coming World Teacher,  reincarnation of ‘ Bodhisattva, “MAITREYA” the Second Buddha. She traveled in Great Britain and the United States with Krishnamurti whom she presented as a new Messiah. In 1911, she founded the ‘Order of the Star of India’ based on the claim that he was Buddha reincarnated. She was his legal guardian till 1921.In 1929, Krishnamurti dissolved this movement.

THE QUEST FOR TRUTH :

The keynote of Annie Besant’s varied activities was her unswerving loyalty to Truth. As she said, “She(Truth) may lead me into wilderness, yet I must follow her; She may strip me of all love, yet I must pursue her; though She slay me, yet will I trust in her; and I ask no other epitaph on my tomb but ‘she tried to follow Truth’ .”

WHAT IS MENTAL FLUIDITY?

What is Mental Fluidity? Richard Lovelace(1618-1657),English Poet and Soldier

SET YOUR MIND FREE  :

Richard Lovelace, a romantic poet was confined within the walls of Gate House, a prison in Westminster, London. From the prison, in 1642 he wrote the poem, “To Althea, from Prison.” The poem has the following famous lines :

Stone walls do not a prison make,

Nor iron bars a cage;

Minds innocent and quiet take

That for a hermitage;

If I have freedom in my love

And in my soul am free,

Angels alone, that soar above,

Enjoy such liberty.

Those who had confined him could not stop him from exercising his ability to think and dream. No one can imprison or enslave the human mind. A human being essentially seeks to exist in a free state and when imprisoned, the man can still set his mind free to think and dream. A mind that is free, expresses its freedom in speech, in writing, in songs and music. Speech in all of its forms conveys the ability of a man to communicate his thoughts. Fluent and coherent speech requires the formulations of propositions, which are translated into conventional symbols, earlier acquired and readily accessible, which then reach external expression by means of an efficient vocalizing apparatus. The sequences involved in efficient speech production could be interrupted at various levels to produce different types of speech defects.

DISTURBANCES OF SPEECH  :

Co-ordination of sensory and motor functions is vital for normal Speech.
What is Mental Fluidity? Co-ordination of sensory and motor functions is vital for normal Speech.

Since speech is an attribute of a free mind, it is important to understand the problems of disturbances of speech:

1. Intellectual impairment : Speech is deranged as a result of a deficit of intellectual function which prevents organization of meaningful propositions. A person who is intoxicated cannot speak well. There are several medical conditions associated with cognitive impairment, and the level of consciousness. Apart from these problems, a person, who is uneducated as he is unwilling to learn, cannot deliver good speech. In Sanskrit language such ignorant persons are identified as ‘MOORKHA’.

2. Dysarthria and Dysphonia : Precise enunciation of words with good volume requires normal function and co-ordination of lips, tongue, palate, and the vocal apparatus called larynx. Several medical conditions could cause a defect in motor output involved in speaking and contribute to slurring  and distortion of speech.

3. Aphasias : These are speech difficulties or absence of speech where the person has no motor disorder and the articulatory system is intact. Three major varieties of aphasias are described. a. Broca’s, motor/expressive/Non-fluent aphasia : Broca’s area of brain produces verbs, builds sentences and predicts what people are going to say. Problems in this area  makes the person’s speech non-fluent as the person has profound word finding difficulties. The person speaks slowly and with great effort. The speech is described as ‘telegraphic’ because it has no grammatic structure and small connecting words (e.g., and, or, but), are missing. The person comprehends well. The person can formulate thoughts in appropriate words i.e. internal speech is preserved, but is unable to translate them into corresponding sounds. b. Wernicke’s/Sensory/Receptive/fluent aphasia : Wernicke’s area of brain is involved in learning patterns corresponding to different types of auditory stimulation. It attaches meanings, images, and feelings to sounds and to individual words. Problems in this area would result in severe impairment in comprehension of language( both spoken and written). The person speaks fluently with ease and often in large amounts. However, the speech often goes in circles( circumlocutory) and contains incorrect word usages( paraphasias). The person fails to understand or carry out spoken instructions. Internal speech is disturbed and hence there is impairment of external speech. The person cannot understand what he hears. c. Conductive aphasia :  The nerve fibers between Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas are involved in this type of problem. The person has trouble converting auditory input to verbal output. It is characterized by a marked inability to repeat words or phrases spoken to the person. d. Dyslexia and Alexia :  Impairment of reading ability in individuals with normal intelligence either due to a developmental disorder or due to acquired brain lesions.

Eloquent Speech is comparable to free flowing water, the words come out continuously without any apparent effort.
What is Mental Fluidity? Eloquent Speech is comparable to free-flowing water, the words come out continuously without any apparent effort.

SPEECH AND MENTAL LETHARGY :

A normal healthy person with normal intelligence and abilities to speak, write, read, and sing may not automatically become a fluent speaker. Human mind needs to exist in a ‘fluid’ state to maintain and sustain a high state of alertness and activity. Mental lethargy is described in Sanskrit language as “JYAADYAA”. The mental lethargy could be due to disease (‘ROGA’), ignorance ( ‘MOORKHA’) ,or could be due to a depressed condition or state of mental activity which is described in Sanskrit language as “JADATHA”. This condition of mental weakness or diminished energy is characterized by intellectual sluggishness. The mind is dull, lazy or indifferent. Whatever term is used, mental inertia, lack of interest or energy or lassitude is an important issue , and the man’s speech lacks the fluency and the mind lacks the ‘fluidity’ that is needed for coordinating activities. Very often, man creates ‘mental barriers’, and erects ‘mental fences’ and impedes his own intellect from generating creative thoughts and in expressing such thoughts through creative forms of speech and music. There should be no obstacles to the flow of thoughts and to its physical expression. In its natural state, a river flows without any impediments and that ‘fluid’ flowing state is important for effective human communications.

The Concept of 'Mental Fluidity' is very important to appreciate Eloquent Speech. Eloquence has a charming quality of its own, it is pleasing to the ears of the listeners and captivates the minds of the menbers of the audience. Speech should make the same impact in terms of its appeal like a scenic picture.

Indian Traditions about Letters, Speech, Arts and Music :

Mind if it is responding slowly, a condition described as ‘Buddhi Mandhyam’, the man cannot realize his creative potential in the field of letters, speech, arts, and music. The Vedic River of Sarasvati is personified as the patron Goddess of Speech (‘VAC or VAK’). Sarasvati enjoys a unique autonomous position and apart from man, the entire Hindu pantheon of Gods pay obeisance to Her and seek Her protection to destroy and dissolve the problem of mental lethargy which impairs mental activity. The mind of man cannot be set free unless the mental barriers and mental fences are totally eradicated and Sarasvati is allowed to flow in its natural state without impediments.

WHAT IS BEAUTY? BEAUTY IS HARMONIOUS BLENDING OF REALITY AND ILLUSION.

What is Beauty? There are two ways of answering this question, 1. A thing of ‘Beauty’ is a Joy for ever, and 2. ‘Beauty’ lies in the eye of the beholder.

WHAT IS BEAUTY? A THING OF BEAUTY IS JOY FOREVER. A BEAUTIFUL OBJECT HAS ESSENCE, INTRINSIC VALUE THAT A BEHOLDER CAN RECOGNIZE EASILY.

I would like to make a brief attempt to understand the theory of beauty and know as to why some objects evoke a particular kind of feeling in the minds of observers.

WHAT IS BEAUTY? Whole Beauty – Whole Aesthetics: Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten(1714-1762), German philosopher coined the term ‘Aesthetics’ from the Greek word for Perception(aisthesis). It denotes a realm of concrete knowledge in which content is communicated in sensory form.

Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of art and the criteria of artistic judgment. Aesthetics involves the study or theory of beauty and of the psychological responses to it. Aesthetics has developed into a broad field of knowledge and inquiry. The term was coined by Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten to denote a realm of concrete knowledge in which content is communicated in sensory form. Now the term is applied to the study of all the works of the fine arts, the useful arts(crafts) and natural phenomena(eg., landscapes, the human face and body) that have aesthetic value and generate an experience called aesthetic experience. Plato and Aristotle formulated conception of art as imitation of nature. Beauty inheres in the object itself and may be judged objectively. Hume identified beauty with that which pleases the observer. Baumgarten emphasized on importance of feeling. If art imitates nature, the artist must deliberately alter nature by adding elements of feeling to perceive reality. The artistic process involves the use of illusion to mirror the creative process of the world.

In his first book, The Birth of Tragedy Out of the Spirit of Music(1872), German philosopher Nietzsche presented a theory of Greek mythology and of the foundations of art. He introduced his famous distinction or dichotomy between the Apollonian or rational element in human nature, and the Dionysian or passionate element of human nature as exemplified in the Greek gods Apollo and Dionysus. In Nietzsche’s view, man achieves a momentary harmony with the Primordial Mystery when the two principles of rational and passionate nature are blended either in art or in life. His book remains a classic in the history of Aesthetics to this day.

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Aesthetics: Greek god Apollo is the god of all plastic energies, the deity of light, god of reason, and god of life and form giving force. Nietzsche describes Apollo as the reality that is ordered and differentiated by forms.
WHAT IS BEAUTY? Whole Beauty – Whole Aesthetics: Son of Zeus, Greek god Apollo is the god of all plastic energies, deity of light, god of reason, and god of life and form giving force. In art, Apollo is portrayed as perfection of Youth and Beauty. Nietzsche describes Apollo as the reality that is ordered and differentiated by forms.
WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Aesthetics: Greek god Dionysus is the god of fertility, and passion. He taught mankind viticulture. He is capable of dreadful revenge upon those who deny his divinity. According to Nietzsche, Dionysus represents reality as disordered and undifferentiated by forms. Dionysus is the god of Choral Music, self-forgetting, embraces chaos and frees the self to seek unity with others and gives way to a primal unity with Nature.

Nietzsche described an art form that transcended the pessimism and nihilism of a fundamentally meaningless world. The tragedy of Ancient Greece was the highest form of art. The Apollonian element represents measure, restraint, and harmony The Apollonian element is found in the dialogue which gives a concrete symbolism that balances the Dionysian element. The Apollonian spirit is able to give form to the abstract Dionysian. Nietzsche claims that the Dionysian element  is to be found in the music of the chorus. Under influence of wine or of narcotic draught, the Dionysian element makes everything subjective to vanish into complete self-forgetfulness.

He is seen recovering his wife Eurydice from Hades after her death. It describes the pain and suffering of human existence and the struggle to overcome it.

Nietzsche describes the inseparable ecstasy and suffering of human existence. He states that man’s ability to live creatively in optimistic harmony with the sufferings of life demand the use of both Apollonian and Dionysian elements. Plato reasons that it is only an aesthetic phenomenon that existence and world are eternally justified. However, Nietzsche claims that knowledge and rationality in themselves do nothing to justify existence and the world. In Nietzsche’s view, life finds meaning only through art, music and tragedy. Existence and world become meaningful not as objects of knowledge but as artistic experiences. Nietzsche includes the Buddhist or the Eastern philosophy of pain and suffering as an inescapable attribute of human existence and emphasizes a tragic longing for nothingness and absence of will. Nietzsche recommends to live a life in a human-dreamt world of illusions. He sees existence as an illusion of illusion. Nietzsche bemoaned the final destruction of Greek tragedy by Greek philosophical inquiry which sought a more logical connection between Nature and mankind. Euripides, Socrates and their disciples demanded a rational explanation of the Greek myths and caused the final destruction of Ancient Greece’s religion and culture.

WHOLE AESTHETICS – WHOLE EXISTENCE – WHOLE UNITY – WHOLE HARMONY:

WHAT IS BEAUTY? Whole Beauty – Whole Aesthetics: Greek philosophical inquiry sought a more logical connection between nature and mankind. Euripides and Socrates demanded a rational explanation of Greek myths and caused the final destruction of Homeric pantheon. I use the term ‘Whole Aesthetics’ to describe the ‘Wholeness’ of Human Existence that requires the ‘Whole Harmony’ between Dependence and Freedom, the Whole Harmony between Illusion and Reality, the ‘Whole Unity’ between Spirit and Soul. At the School of Athens, artist Raphael uses the illusion of an artistic process to create a scene where Plato and Aristotle are debating their conflicting views about Human Nature and Human Existence.

Aesthetics involves the study of objects that have inherent aesthetic quality to generate an aesthetic experience in the mind of an observer who has capacity to interpret sensory information. An artist uses the artistic process to capture the creative process of the world by integrating illusion with reality. I describe the conflict in the nature of human existence is caused by the tension between the two basic elements called Dependence, and Freedom. Human Dependence upon an external source of energy and sustenance is made possible by the vital, animating principle called Soul. The Joy, the Happiness, the Blissful condition of Existence gives the man the desire for Freedom, the Freedom or Independence from Dependence that established the Existence. The pursuit of Freedom may make man to live dangerously with a spirit of recklessness. Finally, Death is inevitable as there is no escape from the nature of Dependent Existence. Man uses the power of Imagination to secure his Freedom from Death and Dependence. Man creates an Illusion of eternal Life in which he sees the Illusion of his Freedom. Spirit is the principle that governs man’s desire for Freedom, and Independence. It is with the principle of Spirit man is able to dream, imagine, and create an Illusion that gives him the relief or the escape from the reality of pain and suffering. I would like to use the term ‘Whole Aesthetics’ to describe integration of the principles of Soul and Spirit to bring ‘Whole Unity’ and ‘Whole Harmony’ between the conflicting elements of Dependence and Freedom by using an artistic process of combining Reality with Illusion. I can discern application of this artistic process in the works of Whole Artist or Whole Designer who makes man to live on the surface of a fast spinning object called planet Earth where the Power of Time churns every future instant into a past instant without ever giving man the chance to recognize experience of a present instant. Man can only recognize a present instant after it gets transformed into a past instant. The Reality of Human Existence is Experience of Illusion that lets man to recognize a past instant as a present instant.

VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION ANGELS – MATERIALISM VS SPIRITUALITY:

The word ‘Expose’ refers to the process of making a hidden fact, or secret known; to lay open, to make accessible, to allow to be seen, disclose, unmask, reveal, display, or exhibit to get public attention to some information. Victoria’s Secret which designs fashionable lingerie for women disclosed that South African Fashion Model, Candice Swanepoel exhibiting Victoria’s Secret’s $10 Million “Royal Fantasy” bra in its fashion show. It gave me an opportunity to examine the philosophical doctrine of Materialism and my doctrine of Spirituality which claims that Spirit or Soul is a material substance that establishes man’s relationship with God.

VICTORIA’S FASHION ANGELS: Candice Swanepoel, South African fashion model exhibited this “Royal Fantasy” bra and matching belt worth US $10 Million in the Year 2013 Fantasy Bra Show hosted by Victoria’s Secret. While it is easy to estimate the price of the Bra, how do we estimate the worth of the human person? Estimation of the value of human flesh will expose the Secret of man’s relationship with God.

Victoria’s Secret has established this tradition of presenting very expensive, or very pricey pieces of women’s lingerie. The “Royal Fantasy Bra” is one of the most expensive bras in the Fashion Show’s history. This bra is created by jeweler Mouawad and is adorned with over 4,200 precious gems including rubies, diamonds, and yellow sapphires all handset in 18-karat Gold. The center piece of attraction is a 52-karat, pear-shaped Ruby. It took about 500 hours to prepare this Fantasy Bra.

VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION ANGELS: South African Fashion Model Candice Swanepoel exposed her body to give me a chance to examine the relationship between Matter, Spirit, and God. Man attached value to material objects and forgets to understand as to what is it to be a substance and what it is to exist. We have to learn to estimate the price of human being, the price of all of its parts, the living matter that forms the human person.

As the saying goes, “The Beauty lies in the Eye of the Beholder.” The value and beauty of insensible, physical matter depends upon the nature of “Sensible Matter” or Matter that has Cognitive Ability. While estimating the price of material, we need to know the distinction between physical matter, and sensible matter.

Karl Marx proposed a theory of Materialism that is based upon mechanistic principles. He had opposed G.W.F. Hegel’s Idealism with his theory of Dialectical Materialism which holds that everything is material and that human beings create social life solely in response to economic needs. He used his theory to predict the course of human history. I use Materialism to explain the problems of method and interpretation used in Science. I would like to share some photo images of Victoria’s Secret’s Fashion Models which expose man’s involvement with insensible physical matter that has no role in supporting man’s biological existence. It is suggested that a materialist is interested mainly in sensuous pleasures and bodily comforts and hence is concerned about acquiring material possessions that bring pleasure and happiness. Life itself is dependent upon a virtually uninterrupted supply of materials for its metabolism during its entire period of existence called lifetime. Apart from the value of material, we have to pay attention to the functional role of the material to understand if it can contribute to joy, and happiness in Life.

Living body has the ability to heal itself and repair its wounds. If this Diamond is cracked, it has no natural ability to correct its defect.

Man has recognized the physical nature of material world and has associated a sense of value with characteristics like physical appearance; lustre, shape, color, and form; durability, resistance to corrosion, and rarity of the material. The word ‘Diamond’ comes from the Latin word ‘Adamas’, and Greek word ‘Adamant’ which means unconquerable, or invincible for it is known as a very hard substance apart from its reflective and refractive properties which can be enhanced by cutting and polishing the stone. A prepared diamond can reflect all the spectral colors. By chemical composition, diamond is defined as a crystalline form of Carbon and yet this Carbon is unlike the Carbon found in all living, organic matter. A diamond cannot replace or repair the broken structures of its own substance, whereas the human body has inherent ability to heal itself using a natural process called ‘Repair and Inflammation’.

The carbon of Diamond does not take part in Carbon Cycle, a nutrient cycle of chemical elements and chemical molecules that define Life and constitute living matter. Diamond is exceptionally hard substance and yet it cannot provide the matter and energy that man gets from organic carbon compounds.

The mineral known as ‘Corundum’ derives its name from Tamil word “Kurundam” and Sanskrit word “Kuruvinda.” It is composed of Aluminum Oxide. It is second only to the diamond in hardness. Pure, transparent varieties of Corundum include the Ruby and Sapphire. Ruby is a clear deep-red variety and the red color is due to minute amounts of Chromic Oxide. Diamonds, Rubies, and other precious stones and gems are known to man for thousands of years and several of them were discovered in India.

The Laws of Physics can explain the generation of Color but cannot explain the mysterious role of water and its presence in living matter.

Sapphire is derived from Sanskrit word “Sanipriya” which means dear to Sanih or the Beloved of planet Saturn. It is a clear deep-blue variety of Corundum and the yellow variety is known as Yellow Sapphire. It is associated with “Beryl”, extremely hard Beryllium and Aluminum Silicate minerals occurring in crystals that are white, yellow, blue, green, or colorless.

MATERIALISM vs SPIRITUALITY:

Materialism is described as a view that considers all facts, the reality of all things including facts about the human mind and will and the course of human history are causally dependent upon  matter, physical processes, or even reducible to Laws of Physics, Chemistry or other mechanistic principles. Materialism tries to explain the nature of reality by examining matter or material objects. The doctrine of Materialism denies existence of immaterial things but cannot deny existence of a dimension called space. Matter with form and specific properties cannot exist if the dimension called space does not exist. However, I am not opposed to the doctrine of Materialism, and just like the materialists, I would insist upon settling questions by reference to public observation and not by private intuition. As per this doctrine of Materialism, it may be stated that 1. mental events including ideas, imagination, and feelings are in reality represent certain complicated physical events, 2. mental processes are entirely determined by physical processes, 3. mental and physical processes are two aspects of what goes on in a substance which is both a mental and a body substance at the same time, and 4. thoughts and wishes influence an individual’s life, but the course of human history is determined by the interactions of masses of people and masses of material things in a predictable manner without reference to the higher processes of thought and will. Materialism is said to be opposed to belief in God, in disembodied spirits, in free will, or in certain kinds of introspective psychology. In modern Quantum Physics, matter is explained in terms of fundamental subatomic particles where the mass of a particle represents its energy content. It could be true that living matter is constituted by such fundamental particles, but the understanding of living matter demands separation of matter and energy. Living matter is defined by chemical molecules and their structural and functional organization that demands supply of energy from an external source.

MATERIALISM VS SPIRITUALITY: In Greek Mythology, King Midas of Phrygia was granted the power of turning everything that he touches into gold. When even his food became gold, his daughter turned into gold, he washed away his power in the Pactolus River. This story reveals the relationship between Physical Matter and Spiritual Matter.

The Spirituality that I describe speaks about the spiritual nature of living matter. Living Matter is always united with Spirit and Soul, and  presence of Spirit and Soul is reflected in the functional characteristics of Living Matter that is sensible, and uses its cognitive ability to attract matter found in its external environment and uses that matter to build new molecules of its own substance to maintain its own existence through guided, sequential, selective, and intelligent actions. In other words, Life is a ‘Dynamic’ process and the chemical molecules that constitute the living matter are continually replaced. Living matter must be supplied energy for continual synthesis of new organic molecules and to replace, or to repair broken organic molecules. The word ‘Metabolism’ is used to describe the processes of synthesis and breakdown of chemical molecules that living matter uses by a constant supply of the materials of which it is composed. The developments in Material Sciences such as Physics and Chemistry indicate that notion of “Cause” and of “Universal Determinism” cannot be entirely denied. It is important to know the physical worth of human body by understanding the nature of its substance. The value of the human body is not related to the material that may be used to adorn the body. All the diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and pearls of this planet Earth when invested together, the material wealth cannot synthesize a gram of the living matter described as Protoplasm, or Cytoplasm, the corporeal substance found in the human body that builds its own flesh, blood, and bones. All the material wealth if combined is not equivalent to the wealth of spiritual nature, the nature that gives ability to synthesize living matter from its constituent chemical elements and chemical molecules that can be found in nature.

The material worth of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Angels is simply far more greater than the material worth of ‘Royal Fantasy’ lingerie they wear in Fashion Shows.
